On May 6th 1954, Civil Air Transport (CAT) pilot James B. McGovern Jr., “Earthquake McGoon” and copilot Wallace Buford struggle to clear the mountains surrounding the Dien Bien Phu valley, after their C-119 is hit by Vietminh anti-aircraft fire. Moments later, their plane will impact the ground near the Nam Ma River, and they will become the first American airmen to die in what would be a protracted conflict in Southeast Asia.
